Grandparents in a Modern Era (Talk Summary)

As grandparents you were also once parents, but listening to you 'soon-to-be-parents' children, you may feel like you arrived in a different time zone. The question is: Can pregnancy, childbirth and parenting really change and are there new things you need an update on?

This talk is aimed at grandparents in the modern era. We discuss pregnancy, birth and parenting information that changed over the years due to new knowledge that became available.

Grandparents are very special and an essential part of the support structure of new parents, but sometimes their involvement may be experienced as interference, just because grandparents and new parents-to-be have different perceptions and experiences about or exposure to childbirth and parenting.

We also talk about the role of grandparents and how to ensure a healthy relationship with the new parent and your new grandchild. Share your experiences and questions with other grandparents and experts.

Dr Welma Lubbe is not only passionate about childbirth and newborn babies, but within a Christian framework, she believes that babies are the beginning of healthy families and as a result a healthy society. She is knowledgeable about care for newborn infants and parenting, especially in challenging situations, but she also realised that parents cannot take on this task on their own.

Many years ago children were raised in a supportive environment, with family and friends close by to support new parents. In the modern era, this support often live far away and parents need new and innovative ways to get support, also resulting in innovative ways to provide support and involvement from grandparents.

For Dr. Welma Lubbe's free gift, she would like to share with Grandparents a humouristic Survival Kit, since new grandparents may need some help to survive and these items may be useful...
